Sure, you can do this layered intensity workout in a gym, but I prefer putting my body through its paces outdoors exposed to real world elements, temperatures and terrain.
I believe training in this manner (when environmentally and atmospherically feasible) makes one more durable, physically capable and prepared for whatever challenges the real world throws at you while cultivating a lean, strong, desired body.
I don’t like to waste my time or pursue so so results, so you will very rarely see me training in a manner that does not hit every single muscle intensely, briefly and using full ranges of real world movements.
Check out the video below that briefly highlights one of the many ways I layer exercise movements in order to achieve an intense, brief and powerful training experience:
This training session is composed of doing backward kettlebell drags, rooted core pulls and iron crusher kettlebell squats all layered in a continuous sequence that flows powerfully well.
A kettlebell drag, pull and squat without stopping is considered one round
Why I Train Like This
It’s powerful, brief, intense, produces good results and doesn’t waste my time
Builds strength, endurance and makes you quite durable
It’s a real core crusher and calorie torcher
Hits every muscle toe to head
A deceptively tough cardio workout is baked into this workout
Easy on the joints and even has a mobility component
Imposes plenty of time under tension on your body to really challenge it to produce a powerful metabolic effect
Tips And Techniques
I drag the kettlebell for a fixed distance such as 30 yards, stop and pull the kettlebell to me and then do 5 squats
I will do 4-6 rounds of this kettlebell layered intensity workout depending on how strong my body feels on training day. Always listen to what your body tells you what it can handle on any given training session.
Police the area for obstacles so you don’t trip up or take a spill
If you can’t do “ass to the grass” squats, no worries. Just work on getting down as low as you can without bending forward or sacrificing good form.
For added intensity, actively crush that kettlebell like it’s an iron grape when doing your squats. It’s a simple move, yet adds a high degree of challenge and powerful core discipline.
Do a proper warmup first
Practice proper breathing- in through the nose and out through the mouth- and never hold your breath!
Choose a kettlebell that will challenge you
Experiment with the training variables such as distance you drag the kettlebell, the terrain you drag it over and the reps you squat. Any one of these variables will influence the level of challenge. My advice is to experiment with one variable at a time per training session so as not to red line the challenge or intensity to counter productive levels.
So give this workout a shot in your training rotation if you value a total body upgrade in strength, conditioning and mobility plus a ramped up metabolism that promotes a tight, lean and fat burning body.

I’m Mark Mellohusky (Mellow-Husky)
Ever since I slung around a cheap set of cement weights in my garage and pushed the family vehicles around the neighborhood for additional exercise in my early teens, I have been an eternal practicing student of physical culture.
Over the years, I have actively sought out those with greater physical skills than myself and learned from them in a respectful manner and apply their timeless concepts to my own training ideas that I enjoy sharing.
I don’t pretend to be everything to everybody as that is a loser’s game in life
And I don’t follow the flashy, ever distracted and ineffective fitness industry herd that gravitate toward mindless activity and chasing crazy variety hoping for results that never seem to happen
Thoughts For Success
Forging an iron body will take you far in life, but cultivating an iron character will make you invincible and truly valued. Achieve both and the world will be your oyster to pluck pearls from!
A high quality life tends to be about collecting good people around you
You don’t learn by watching, you learn from doing
Social media actually tricks your mind into thinking that a person has more friends than they actually do
If your training program is injuring you, then you or your trainer don’t know what you are doing
