A little lesson in training with an odd object in the spirit of Halloween
Your body responds well when you combine performing productive total body exercises with real world objects.
It produces a strong metabolic effect as the odd load and grip points forces your body to work harder and dial into your technique with greater precision and purpose.
This type of training is challenging and productive without having to use super heavy weights.
That’s because most gym equipment and bars are perfectly cambered and engineered to be so ergonomic and user friendly it makes lifting heavier loads easier.
Try lifting a challenging log or sandbag off the ground and press it over your head or do a chinup on a tree branch to see what I mean. It will humble your fitness ego, but definitely improve your real world fitness capability if you can wrap your head around the concept.
The profound total body strength mobility effect and results you get just doesn’t compare to pressing weight on a machine – not that I’m opposed to it.
Check out this demo where I layer reverse lunges, the hot potato core drill and front squats together with a pumpkin to challenge my body by incorporating very productive exercises into a powerful movement flow.
I’m just patterning these productive moves to share the flow with you so as not to bore you watching me do rep after rep.
Tips And Technique
Try doing this workout in a time based manner.
I suggest doing 30 seconds of alternating reverse lunges, followed by 30 seconds of the hot potato (pumpkin) drill and 30 seconds of front squats then rest for one minute.
This is a round of exercise
See how many quality rounds you can perform in 10 minutes
Concentrate on performing deliberate and purposeful repetitions and don’t obsess on speeding through the exercises just to rack up a lot of sloppy reps.
To increase the challenge, you can slow down your lunge and squat tempo, increase the time for each exercise – say to 40 seconds, reduce your rest time between rounds, bump up the total exercise time to 15 minutes or grab a bigger pumpkin(increase the load.)
But I caution you to change only one of these variables at a time and not counter productively pulverize your central nervous system energy into submission inviting bad form and potential injury.
Try applying some of these concepts in your everyday real world travels for a powerfully productive spin on your current fitness program and dare to break with the fitness herd chasing mediocre results.

I’m Mark Mellohusky (Mellow-Husky)
I tenaciously hunt down powerfully productive fitness methods and life quality lessons that improve anybody daring to take action and make a positive change.
I enjoy sharing my fitness training and health philosophies I practice that I have either adopted or tweaked from some of the fitness greats in history or designed myself. Most of my adult life has been spent testing out and experimenting with countless fitness methodologies.
I achieve success by filtering out and keeping the most productive methods that pay the greatest fitness dividends for my precious time invested and dumping those methods with the least value.
I pride myself on being a product of my own advice.
The methods I practice enable me to be a powerfully active (often barefoot) eternal student of physical culture who will not go quietly into the sunset since I have learned how to age gracefully by adopting sane eating strategies, staying strong and lean, moving well and pain-free and conquering nasty fat.
All without spending hours haunting gyms doing hours of sappy media endorsed low value exercises and gulping down expensive and questionable supplements.
While I share A lot of tips, techniques, and fitness philosophy on my site, it is unrealistic to try to adopt it all into your fitness plan as we all have different health and fitness gaps in our programs we need to address.
So take what you need to succeed even if it’s just one concept and fill those fitness gaps, dare to get out of your comfort zone and experience the thrill of doing what works and realizing your goals!
There’s a sparkle in my eyes and iron in my thighs!
